In Such a Manner

When Luke writes that Paul and Barnabas "spoke in such a manner that a great number of people believed" (Acts 14:1), he reveals something important about successful evangelism. The phrase "such a manner" suggests that it was not only what they said but how they said it that produced faith in those who heard.
Evangelism is often treated as an exchange of facts – the transfer of biblical information from one mind to another. Yet the gospel, while containing divine truth, is not a cold lecture; it is the living word of God shared through the personality, tone, compassion, and conviction of the messenger. Paul and Barnabas were not merely teachers; they were witnesses. Their words carried the warmth of personal faith and the power of conviction.
The "manner" of gospel sharing includes our attitude, tone, and motives. A preacher or teacher can be technically accurate yet spiritually ineffective if his delivery lacks sincerity or love. Conversely, one who speaks with gentleness and confidence can reach hearts even when his presentation is simple. Paul encouraged believers to speak "the truth in love" (Ephesians 4:15), showing that truth and love must travel together if the message is to bear fruit.
In other words, the gospel message is powerful because it is true, but it is persuasive because it is spoken in a Christlike manner. Paul would later write that his preaching came not only in word but also "in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction" (I Thessalonians 1:5).
Jesus Himself modeled this. The crowds were amazed at His gracious words (Luke 4:22). His authority did not come from volume or eloquence but from the harmony between His message and His spirit. When He invited the weary to come to Him (Matthew 11:28), His tone matched His words. Soul winning today still depends on this union of truth and grace.
If we wish to speak "in such a manner" that many believe, we must prepare both our message and our manner.
- Know the gospel well enough to explain it clearly.
- Love souls deeply enough to express it tenderly.
- Trust God enough to speak it boldly.
It is not enough to tell people what to believe; we must also show them how believers speak – with faith, hope, and love.
