7 Lessons Taught By Manna
Shortly after the Israelites left Egypt, they found themselves in the wilderness of Sin, between Elim and Sinai. The initial thrill of freedom quickly gave way to hunger.
In Exodus 16:2-3, the people grumbled against Moses and Aaron, longing even for the food of their former slavery.
In response, God did something extraordinary:
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you;
- Exodus 16:4a
Each morning, fine flakes like frost appeared on the ground. When the people saw it, they said, "What is it?"–which in Hebrew sounds like mān hū. That question became its name: manna (Exodus 16:14-15).
For forty years–until they entered Canaan–God fed an entire nation in the wilderness (Exodus 16:35). This was not merely food. It was a daily sermon.
Let us consider 7 Lessons Taught by Manna–three about God, three about ourselves, and one about life itself.
3 Lessons About God
1. His Power
God fed approximately three million people in a barren wilderness–miraculously.
- No farms.
- No supply chains.
- No stored reserves.
- No imports.
Every morning, food appeared on the ground. It followed them wherever they traveled (Numbers 11:7-9). This was not a naturally recurring desert phenomenon available to all.
It was specifically and exclusively for Israel. When they crossed into Canaan and ate the produce of the land, the manna ceased (Joshua 5:12).
This demonstrated a simple truth: God's power is not theoretical. It is active, precise, and personal. If He could feed a nation daily in a desert, He could fulfill every promise He had made to them.
2. His Dependability
For forty years, God did not miss a day.
The cycle was exact:
- Five days: gather enough for one day.
- Sixth day: gather double.
- Seventh day: none would appear (Exodus 16:22-26).
The pattern never failed.
- Some tried to store extra during the week–it spoiled (Exodus 16:19-20).
- Some tried to gather on the Sabbath–there was none (Exodus 16:27).
God's provision followed His Word precisely.
If you could depend on Him for daily bread for forty years, you could depend on Him for everything else He said.
Manna trained Israel to trust God daily, not occasionally.
3. His Mercy
God fed them whether they were obedient or rebellious.
- They complained (Exodus 16:8).
- They doubted (Numbers 11:4-6).
- They longed for Egypt.
Yet every morning, manna lay on the ground.
His mercy was generated by Him–not by them.
He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord.
- Deuteronomy 8:3
Manna was mercy made visible.
3 Lessons About Themselves
1. They Were Humbled
Every morning, the message was clear: They needed God.
They could not feed themselves. They could not create life. They could not secure their own survival in the wilderness. It was obvious who had the power and who did not. Pride does not survive long when you must gather your life from the ground every morning.
2. They Were Special
No other nation they knew of had a god who fed them daily with food from heaven. The surrounding pagan nations feared their gods, appeased their gods, sacrificed to their gods–but none received free, daily bread from heaven. Israel did. This was covenant love.
19He declares His words to Jacob,
- Psalm 147:19-20
His statutes and His ordinances to Israel.
20He has not dealt thus with any nation;
And as for His ordinances, they have not known them.
Praise the Lord!
They were not merely surviving in the wilderness–they were being sustained by the living God.
3. They Had a Purpose Beyond Survival
Other nations had two options:
- A good life until you die.
- A bad life until you die.
But Israel's calling was higher.
They were chosen to serve the true and living God (Exodus 19:5–6). Their existence was not merely about eating and surviving–it was about covenant relationship and mission.
Manna reminded them daily: You exist for more than survival. You exist for God.
1 Lesson About Life
1. This Was Reality
What they were living was what was most real. Reality was - Life with God.
Every morning, clean, white, life-giving manna lay on the ground. It was physical proof that reality is not defined by circumstances, but by relationship with God.
The pagan nations chased fulfillment through corrupted religion, idols of metal and stone, and distorted desires. Their pursuit only deepened confusion and darkness (Romans 1:21-23).
But Israel did not need to chase. Reality lay at their feet each morning. Their hearts were wired for life with God–though sin had darkened and distorted those desires. Manna was daily evidence: You have what the nations are searching for.
Our Manna
Nothing has changed. What humanity truly wants is still the same: life with God.
The options remain:
- A good life until you die.
- A bad life until you die.
Today we can observe, compare, and compete in real time. Through digitized communication, global networks, and even artificial intelligence, we measure and market "the good life." We argue about which system, ideology, leader, or alliance can deliver it. And now even reality itself can be distorted.
Yet through all the noise, God still provides manna from heaven. That manna is Jesus Christ.
Did He not say:
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.
- John 6:35
I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”
- John 6:51
Just as manna fell from heaven daily, Christ came down from heaven once for all (John 6:32-33).
We are still wired for life with God.
While the nations chase idols–ancient or modern–God's good news continues to fall to the earth through preaching, Scripture, witness, and testimony.
Jesus is the manna of true life. The food we truly long for except we don't realize this until someone, somehow reveals it to us through the preaching of the gospel.
Invitation
Are you hungry for what is real? Come feed on His Word daily.
Are you ready for life with God? Jesus said:
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
- John 3:5
His Apostle said:
Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
- Acts 2:38
Therefore, why would anyone wait? Be reborn in Spirit and in truth. Be baptized in His name.
Summary
Since that time in the wilderness, Nothing has changed. The manna still falls. The question today is the same as it was in the wilderness:
Will you gather it?
Come for the Manna of Jesus as we stand and sing the song of encouragement.
