Why Demons Begged Jesus for Permission
In Mark 5:8-12 Jesus confronts a man possessed by a "Legion" of demons. This dramatic scene raises a challenging question: Why were these evil spirits able to torment a man without divine permission, but then had to ask Jesus' permission to enter a herd of swine?
The key lies in understanding the difference between God's permissive will and Christ's immediate authority. In a fallen world, demons operate freely to deceive and destroy, especially in the lives of those outside God's covenant. The man possessed by Legion lived in the region of the Decapolis–Gentile territory–suggesting he lacked spiritual protection. Within such contexts, demons act as hostile agents exploiting the brokenness of creation.
However, when Jesus arrives, the dynamic shifts dramatically. The demons are instantly subject to His authority. No longer free to roam, they must now plead with the Son of God not to send them "out of the country," or into judgment. Their request to enter the swine reveals their fear–not only of Jesus, but of the punishment they know awaits them at the final judgment.
This episode reveals several important truths. First, Jesus' absolute dominion extends into the spiritual realm. He doesn't perform an exorcism using formulas or rituals; He commands, and even a legion of demons obeys. Second, demonic forces, though real and active, are ultimately limited and subject to Christ's will. Third, the destruction of the swine symbolizes the destructive intent of demons–they do not bring life, only chaos and death.
Most importantly, this story reminds believers that no matter how oppressive or dark the forces of evil may seem, they tremble before the presence of Christ. His authority is not only cosmic but deeply personal–He delivers, restores, and protects those who belong to Him.
