Sooner Spirit

Article by:

The thrilling victory scored over Nebraska is sure to keep Sooner fans happy for a long time to come. Aside from an excellent effort by the Norman squad, their play reminded me of the larger game of Christian living and what we need to remember when facing our greatest opponent, Satan and his forces:

1. Don't Panic When You're Down

The Oklahoma Sooners fell behind early but didn't fall apart. This calmness was the key to their turnaround. Christians need to do the same when they fall behind in their battle with sin or discouragement. Remaining calm and continuing to trust in the Lord will stop the fall and enable us to get back into the game.

2. Make the Needed Adjustments

OU was stung by two easy touchdowns but quickly adjusted their offense to win these back. Sometimes old spiritual strategies don't work in meeting new challenges or temptations. Satan has many ways to beat us and so we need to meet him with renewed commitment and spiritual growth in order to stay ahead in the long run.

3. Take Advantage of the Home Field

The 76,000 Sooner fans managed to energize their team to a final and decisive victory. They were a definite advantage to the home team. Our fans are not visible but the Bible says that we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses (Hebrews 12:1) who encourage us in our race. Faithful men and women who have gone before us and have left a legacy of faith and perseverance for us to follow in our battle. Their example is our motivation.

They yelled and celebrated long into the night after the game in Norman. But next week, and next month, there will be new opponents to face in a never ending contest of win and lose. Our victory as Christians however, is eternal. Once our game is finished, it will be over once for all - but our celebration will last forever.

GO CHRISTIANS!!!
