Peace, Perfect Peace
We can't help but witness the most recent war in the Middle East between Israel and Lebanon. While this battle rages on, the British police foil an attempt by terrorists to hijack and destroy 10 planes while they flew from London to the United States.
People are naturally concerned and afraid. Many march in the streets shouting, "Peace!" and demand that governments or the United Nations do something to create peace in this world. I, for one, am not afraid. Not because I live in Canada or feel safe and protected in my city and home. I know that I am as vulnerable as anyone else on this earth to the world's violence and war. No, I am not afraid because the peace that I know comes from Christ and His promise:
Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,”
- Hebrews 13:5
Like the Hebrew writer, I can confidently say,
The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What shall man do to me?
- Hebrews 13:6
There will always be wars and threats of wars (Matthew 24:6) so the efforts of men will only accomplish temporary "cease-fires" at best. The true peace and freedom from fear in all of this is that which we experience in Christ who guards our souls and calms our hearts despite the wars that rage around us.
