Joy of Irresponsibility
I don't think anyone would argue the fact that becoming a responsible person is a worthy goal. However, too much of this good thing can lead to burn our or (when it comes to religion) legalism. Let us remember that in the kingdom of God there are some things that we are not responsible for:
1. We are not responsible to pay for our sins.
Peter says that Jesus "...bore our sins in His body on the cross" I Peter 2:24. This frees us form the burden of having to make restitution to God for our evil deeds. Jesus is responsible for our moral debts, not us.
2. We are not responsible for the church.
Jesus is the head of the church (Colossians 1:18). Jesus adds to the church (Acts 2:47). Jesus will eliminate the unfaithful (Matthew 25:14-30). Jesus is responsible for all growth in the church, not us.
3. We are not responsible for deciding who is saved.
Out task is to preach the gospel and witness Christ with our good lives, not try to figure out who is going to hell. When Jesus comes He will bring His own with Him to Heaven (I Thessalonians 4:13-18). We are not the ones who decide and this is not the time. Jesus is responsible for final judgment, not us.
Life is filled with enough responsibility. Let's not add the ones that don't belong to us, especially those that only Jesus can carry.
