Paul continues with his answer to the question, "If I am under grace, why should I try to obey the Law?" In this section, he will respond to this question from an experiential instead of an historical perspective.
Discussion Questions
- Paul explains that under grace, we pursue righteousness more eagerly than we ever did under the Law. How have you experienced this difference between trying to obey out of fear versus obeying out of love and gratitude?
- The lesson describes eternal life not only as "time without end" but as a present experience of righteousness, sanctification, and assurance. Which of these aspects of eternal life do you most recognize in your own walk with Christ?
- Paul uses the imagery of slavery–either to sin leading to death, or to righteousness leading to life. How does this perspective challenge the modern idea of "freedom" as doing whatever we want?
- The lesson says that good works cannot save us or make us more righteous, but they serve as evidence of our faith and a witness to others. How does this reshape the way we think about our daily acts of service or obedience?
- Works motivated by grace glorify God and bring peace, while works motivated by pride or pragmatism can cause division or discouragement. What are some practical ways we can check our motives to ensure our good works flow from grace?
