1. Summarize Genesis 6:14-16 and answer the following questions.

God gives Noah specific instructions to build a floating vessel in which he, his family and air breathing animals would be saved from the flood.

Why did God provide the details for building the Ark?

God knew what was to happen and what would be needed for their survival.

What was Noah's reaction and the final result?

Noah did what God commanded and was saved as God promised.

What is the implication of this passage for us?

God will make a way to save the faithful people who obey Him.

2. Genesis 6:9 states that Noah walked with God. This is the same language in Genesis 5:27 that describes Enoch. Why was Noah not taken as Enoch was?

God had a different plan for Noah. God did not destroy Noah along with the rest due to his righteousness. It was through Noah that the promise of a redeemer would come.

Note: It is up to God how He rewards and punishes. He knows His plans for us and how to best carry them out. Our role is to do the best we can to be faithful. God will keep His promise to reward us beyond our ability to comprehend.

3. What are some lessons we can learn from Genesis 6:17-22.

There are several lessons in these verses. The intent of the question is to show that God is in control of His creation and knows what is best for us.

  • God is the one who destroyed the life that He created. He was in full control. Man had destroyed his own innocence but God brought about the ultimate end of that generation. (vs. 17)
  • God will ultimately act against evil and on behalf of His righteous people. (vs. 17)
  • God confirms His promise of a redeemer by specifically establishing a covenant with Noah. (vs. 18)
  • God knows our needs and provides for them. (vs. 19-21)
  • Noah did as God commanded and was saved. It was through Noah's obedience that God considered him righteous. (vs. 22)
4. How do the following statements show the Ark was type for the Church today?
  • One Ark/one church
  • Safety only in the Ark/Safety only in the church
  • Only one way into the ark/only one way into the church (Christ – John 14:6)
  • Those in the ark are alive through the water/Those in the church are alive through the water of baptism
  • The ark carries them to the next life; a re-created earth/The church carries us to the new heavens and new earth.
  • Only believers were in the ark/Only believers are in the church.
  • The ark was laughed at and seemed irrelevant before the flood/The church seems irrelevant before the judgment.
  • The ark was built by those who believed and obeyed God's promises/The church is built by those who believe and obey God's promises.
  • God provided for those who built and lived in it / God provides for the establishing of His church and preserves it through the catastrophes of this life.

The ark was necessary because the flood did come. The church is necessary because the judgment will surely come with Jesus' return.

5. How can you use this lesson to grow spiritually and help others come into a relationship with Jesus?

God has always provided salvation for the faithful. Those not faithful have always faced ultimate judgment and destruction. Many begin their spiritual journey to avoid punishment. However, as we grow in knowledge of God as well as His love and grace, we develop dedication and the desire to be what He wants us to be. This story shows us the importance of our membership in the Church through which we effectively serve God, but the type of Ark through which we will avoid the next catastrophe for those who refuse to believe the gospel. We do not earn righteousness but are made righteous through the blood of Christ (Romans 3:22; Romans 5:1-11).
