God Loves... Even Superman

Devo by:

Christopher Reeves, who played Superman in the movies, broke his neck in a riding accident. Doctors reported that he would probably be completely paralyzed.

My first response was that morbid kind of curiosity you have when bad things happen to famous people. This was followed by the weird pleasure that comes from sharing news that surprises someone else…"Did you know the guy who played Superman broke his neck?!" At about this time I caught myself moralizing about the fact that this fellow had everything -- fame, success, money, and now he was somehow receiving what he deserved.

Thankfully my conscience stepped in and reminded me of:

For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble…
- I Corinthians 1:26

Here Paul tells the Corinthian brethren that not many of them had high or mighty backgrounds before they came to Christ, but some did!

I concluded, once again, that God is interested in the salvation of everyone's soul and that includes the rich and famous as well as the poor and humble.

The lesson I've learned from my fall into Christian self-righteousness is that God loves everybody, even the people I sometimes envy. I've thought about Mr. Reeves since and I hope that he will recover, that this accident will move him to find the wonderful God who loves everyone - including Superman and those who sometimes wish they were.
